Herbs can easily be grown indoors if you make sure to get started off the right way. The key to successfully creating an kitchen herb garden is understanding the plant’s requirements and giving them what they need. To ensure your success, follow the steps below.Step 1: Select the right herbs
When choosing which herbs to plant, selecting ones you already use regularly is a great way to get started, but make sure they are suitable to grow indoors. Perennial plants like rosemary, chives, thyme, oregano, bay laurel, and mint are the best herbs to grow indoors from seedlings.![]()
Step 2: Use the correct containers
Use individual pots for each herb so you can give each plant the specific care it needs. Ensure your containers have drainage holes and waterproof saucers. If you want to plant multiple types of herbs in a single container, make sure their needs are aligned.Step 3: Plant carefully
Choose a high-quality potting soil mix that includes composted bark and peat moss – this will provide your plants with loose soil that drains well. When selecting a potting mix, look at the label and make sure it is suitable for indoor garden plants. Don’t ever use dirt from the ground in your indoor garden pots. It’s too compact and will not allow the plant’s roots to breathe.![]()
Step 4: Choose a sunny spot
The more light you can provide for your indoor herb garden, the better they will grow and taste. Most herbs need at least six hours of sunlight, so a bright, sunny window is an ideal location, and a north-facing window is best.Step 5: Don’t over water
The biggest mistake people make when growing an indoor herb garden is overwatering – you'll be surprised by how little water it takes to sustain a small herb. Consistently wet soil will just end up rotting your indoor herb garden and it’s especially easy to overwater when they’re sitting next to the kitchen sink!Step 6: Harvest a little at a time
Clip or pinch off a few sprigs at a time but avoid removing more than a quarter of the plant. Regular cutbacks bring about new growth but cutting too much can damage or kill the plant.Step 7: Transplant when needed
Your herbs will eventually outgrow their pots, and some signs that it’s time to transplant include roots growing out of drainage holes, stalled growth, or a plant that leans or flops over. Both annual and perennial herbs can be moved into larger pots within your home at any time, just keep them close to a light source.![]()

Woks are popular because they distribute heat evenly and cook food quickly. They also require less oil than frying pans and work well in creating delicious Asian dishes. There are a lot of different types of woks. Traditional Chinese woks were created for wood-burning stoves and made of cast iron. Today, there are woks made from all types of materials that are suitable for all kinds of cooktops, including the NEFF Dual Flame Wok Burner.
When you should consider cooking with a wok
Sometimes a frying pan just doesn’t cut it. A wok really is your best bet when it comes to making dinner quickly, creating healthier meals (because woks use less oil), and when you’re using a lot of ingredients at once. If you’re unsure about how to cook with a wok, there are some tips you can follow to make sure your meals turn out great.TIP 1: Choose the right setting for your cooktop
When cooking with a wok, the first thing you need to do is select the right setting for your cooktop. Some NEFF gas cooktops feature a dual flame wok burner. The dual wok gives you the choice between one or two rings – one for simmering and for sizzling – which means you’ll always get the right amount of heat when frying your meat and veggies. The dual system allows you to reach high temperatures of upto 22 Mj/h, meaning you can cook more at once.Tip 2: Make sure you have all the right tools
Because woks are shaped differently than western frying pans, the type of tools used for cooking with woks are a bit different too. You may want to invest in a suitable brush for cleaning your wok in addition to a slotted spoon, a spatula and a ladle all with long handles so you don’t risk burning yourself on the edge of the wok as you cook.Tip 3: Take care of your wok
It’s recommended that you season your wok every time you cook. This means heating up some oil in your wok and disposing of it once it’s smoking hot before adding fresh oil. It’s also important to use the right kinds of oil – not all are suitable for woks. Canola oil, peanut oil and sesame oils tend to be popular choices as they have a high smoking point unlike olive oil.Tip 4: Don’t try to cook too much at once
While you’re able to cook more in a wok than in most frying pans, if you overload it, you won’t get the searing heat you need to properly cook the dish you’re making. It’s best to cook the amount the recipe calls for and make a second batch rather than doubling it all at once. Your meal will turn out better if you make sure everything can heat up properly.Tip 5: Practice makes perfect
If you’re not used to using a wok, it may take a few tries to get it down pat. Figuring out the toss to properly mix your vegetables and distribute heat evenly can be a bit of a challenge, but if you practice, you’ll be a master in no time. On a daily basis, they do the heavy lifting in our kitchen and work overtime at family gatherings. But if you don’t load them correctly, your crockery and cutlery won’t come out squeaky clean, and your appliance likely won’t go the distance. Read on to find out how to improve your dish stacking skills. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvy-kM7j_Yk[/embed]How to load plates and bowls in your dishwasher
Large dinner plates as well as large bowls need to be loaded in the bottom basket. Each plate should sit between the racks without touching each other so the water can flow through freely. Rinsing your plates prior to loading isn’t necessary (contrary to popular opinion!) but you should scrape off any food as this could block the filter. NEFF dishwashers come with our RackMatic feature, allowing you to adjust the height of the top basket to create more space for big plates in the bottom basket – ensuring everything is cleaned properly. Small bowls and saucers should be loaded in the upper basket, but make sure that they’re not catching on the third basket, if your NEFF dishwasher has one.
How to load glassware and cups
Fine glassware should always be washed in the upper basket because of its fragility. Tall glasses and tumblers should be placed along the sides, upside down and not touching, with shorter glasses placed towards the centre. If the bottoms of certain cups or dishes are slightly concave, it helps to lean them at an angle to avoid collecting dirty water. NEFF dishwashers have an etagere that folds out to keep wine glass stems steady and some have a glass rack in the lower basket for tall stemmed glasses. There’s also a specific glassware program for sensitive glasses. Thanks to this program, nothing stops you from washing high quality, fragile glasses in your dishwasher. The gentle cleaning method uses low temperatures, an optimised rinse aid temperature and a longer drying phase to guarantee gentle and shiny washing and drying results.
How to load cutlery
How to best load your cutlery will depend on whether you’re using a cutlery basket or a cutlery drawer. You want each knife, fork and spoon to be separated so it gets a thorough clean. This is easy with a cutlery drawer as the prongs will separate them, but make sure all utensil openings are facing down and any parts with curves or indentations are sitting at an angle to allow water to drain. If you’re using a basket, forks and spoons should be placed handle-down, while knives should be handle-up for safety reasons. It can be very tempting to remove the dividing lid to fit more cutlery in the basket, but don’t do it as they won’t be washed properly.
How to load pots and pans into a dishwasher
Pots and pans should be loaded in the lower basket where your dishwasher’s most powerful spray jets are positioned. Make sure they these don’t cover other items in the dishwasher, and you should also check any protruding handles won’t block the spray arm. Give the spray arm a spin before you start a cycle to be sure. If it’s blocked and you can’t reposition the pan, you can always utilise the RackMatic feature. When placing pots and pans into your dishwasher, you can make the most use of space by leaning them at an angle against the prongs, rather than placing them flat. But if they have baked-on food on them, place them facedown and toward the lower spray arm.How to unload your dishwasher
Empty the bottom rack first. Otherwise, water that collects on the concave surfaces of mugs and glasses in the top rack will spill onto the plates, pots, and dishes below.Top tips for loading your dishwasher
- Face all plates toward the middle
- Place flat pans away from the door
- Don’t overload the dishwasher
- Avoid putting sharp knives in the dishwasher
- Always check your crockery and cutlery is dishwasher safe

Substitution starters
Substitution is the easiest way to cut down on meal prep right off the bat. One of the most straightforward ways to go about this, is to make a base meal and then sub ingredients in to please the entire table. The swapping in of chicken or tofu is a common one when meat-eaters are dining with vegetarians. Especially flexible dishes are the staples – rice dishes (such as risotto) and pasta dishes, where two variations of pasta sauce can be made. For instance, a spaghetti bolognaise might not fit the bill with vegetarians, so making another sauce option using lentils instead of mince is a lot easier than concocting an entirely new menu option. The next level to substitution is preparing things ‘buffet style’, where lunches and dinners are prepped at a base level and the people can add their own options themselves. Recipes like Thai beef salad are easily adaptable to become meatless (or tofu-full depending on how you look at it) by letting people add what they want themselves.Multi-tasking masters
Doing multiple things at once is the oft-recited core role of the modern parent. But with the NEFF range of ovens and cooktops this overambitious position description becomes reality. Made for convenience, multitasking is a key to the design of NEFF CircoTherm® function. Offering the cooking multiple meals simultaneously without the intermingling of flavours, CircoTherm® is a revolution for meal prepping, providing the option to cook different meals simultaneously. The Flex induction cooktops offer a similar time-saving intuition. NEFF FlexInduction technology enables the induction cooktops to sense how many pots and the size of each that are on each burner and heats up accordingly. TwistPadFire, a magnetic, illuminated, removable control dial, enables precise control over each cooking area, so different ingredients can be cooking simultaneously to absolute perfection. Adaptable technology means you can align techniques such as frying or roasting for multiple meals at once, while still attaining perfect results for each ingredient. This allows you to prep for multiple meals in manageable stages and make more time for the important things, like eating and spending time with the people you love.Enticing Alternatives
Although substituting ingredients and cooking multiple meals at once does save some time in the short term, the endgame is expanding or aligning diets. Sometimes, dietary choices are allergy based or otherwise unable to shift, but sometimes, it’s just a matter of taste. But moving beyond potato chips and peanut butter (at least partially) is an important part of growing up, especially with the adventurous palates that we’re developing in kids today. Luckily, there’s no shortage of meal ideas for fussy eaters. Some do their best to slip by the heightened senses of the fussy eater, just by looking like fast food, but if veggie fries and avo dip, won’t do it, try something with fast food appeal, but with a gourmand’s flair, like saffron potato towers, featuring crispy fried potato with a range of herbs and chili. And of course, if all else fails, there’s always cheese. Whether it’s in the form of cheesy roast cauliflower, or a slightly ritzier mac and cheese (featuring three different cheeses), there’s very few fussy eaters that will refuse this gooey goodness. These time saving strategies might start out as small wins, but they’re wins nonetheless. And if you do succeed in introducing some subtle alternatives to a fussy eater’s diet, then they’re wins for the long term. ___________________________________________________ About NEFF NEFF is a German-engineered kitchen appliance brand, with a product range that includes ovens, cooktops, rangehoods, coffee machines and dishwashers designed to make life in the kitchen a daily pleasure.
