  2. 3 kitchen renovation traps to avoid

Comments Off on 3 kitchen renovation traps to avoid

    1. Measuring incorrectly

As the saying goes for any renovation – measure twice and cut once. And for one of the most used spaces in the home, embracing this mantra for your kitchen is a must.

One of the most common traps people fall into is not measuring their kitchen layout properly. We’ve all experienced at least one kitchen with these measurement flaws – whether it left you dealing with cupboards that can’t open properly or a cavity no fridge could ever fit in. Measuring incorrectly could also result in choosing appliances that are either too big or too small for the space – leaving you with unsightly gaps to fill or costly appliances to exchange.

It’s important that you double check your (or your tradie’s) measurements before making big appliance purchases. If you’ve checked your measurements twice (or even thrice) for your kitchen appliances, then you can maintain a gap-free appearance with the NEFF appliance range. The unique trims allow vertically stacked appliances, such as having a NEFF compact oven above a unique Slide&Hide® disappearing door oven to look seamless and perfectly in-line.

    1. Sacrificing function for style

While it may seem like a good idea to go all in on your kitchen’s aesthetic, sacrificing your kitchen’s features for the sake of style is one of the most common traps renovators fall into. Your kitchen is the one space where functionality truly matters. There’s nothing worse than not having enough storage space, a kitchen island that’s prone to scratches but looked great online or even appliances that can’t do what you need but look great.

While having a mood board is great, before you go too far down the swatch path make a list of the things you need your kitchen to do – from storage options and space for preparation, right through to oven sizes and warming drawers. Design the kitchen you need, then add your style to it.

    1. Including major kitchen appliances as an afterthought

Appliances have changed significantly over the last few years thanks to the latest cooking technologies and innovations out there. But some kitchen renovators just get what they think will work because it’s cheap, rather than taking the time to do research and find the appliances that suit their cooking needs best.

“The one thing I’ve seen is that people don’t plan for their kitchen appliances,” Tyson says. “They get whatever’s available because it fits a gap in their kitchen, rather than thinking through how often they’ll use it, what features they need and so on.”

When it comes to appliances, the NEFF range includes unique cooking features that streamline everyday and occasional cooking, make cleaning easier, and elevate the style of your kitchen. The NEFF Slide&Hide® oven is perfect for maximising space while you cook, so you don’t need to juggle your food and oven door awkwardly anymore. The CircoTherm® technology also allows for an easy, even cook, no matter what you’re creating.

If you’re planning to do a kitchen renovation, then make sure you avoid these traps with NEFF’s appliances. You can book a free demonstration with a NEFF cooking expert, who can help you discover which appliance is right for you.

  3. How to design a cottage-inspired kitchen

Comments Off on How to design a cottage-inspired kitchen

    Emphasise natural materials and textures

One of the key characteristics of a cottagecore kitchen is its use of natural materials and textures. Wood, in particular, is a key material due to its warmth – both in hue and temperature absorption. It perfectly complements stone or exposed brick, especially when it comes in the form of hardwood floors or distressed wooden cabinets.

NEFF’s induction cooktop is sleek and thin enough to help create meals that go along with the cottage core trends (a warming pumpkin soup, anyone?) without detracting from the aesthetic.

    Incorporate vintage and repurposed elements

To truly capture the essence of a cottage-inspired kitchen, incorporate vintage and repurposed elements into your design. Hunt for antique furniture pieces like farmhouse tables, or vintage cabinets. These pieces add a sense of history and nostalgia, instantly infusing your kitchen with character.

You could also consider transforming old wooden crates into open shelving units, or repurposing vintage mason jars as storage containers. These creative touches not only contribute to the rustic feel, but also make your kitchen design unique and personalised.

    Blend style with cooking craft

Think of cottagecore style as returning to a simpler time – and what better way to do that than by eschewing some elements of store-bought, plastic-packaged modern convenience in favour of homemade delights.

From windowsills adorned with pots of fresh herbs, hanging garlands of garlic, or homemade jams and preserves, these elements not only add a nod of cottage style to your space, but give you plenty of flavour to amplify your food. Whether you’re wanting to take your cottage-inspired home to a new level with an edible garden or you simply want to make sure your chillis or lemons don’t go to waste, using your favourite ingredients in your styling is both practical and pretty.

    Don’t sacrifice modern function

While a cottage-inspired kitchen is about creating a warm and cosy vibe, every cook knows a kitchen is nothing without functional appliances.

The oven is the heart of the kitchen, and having one as nifty as this Choice Recommended Oven from NEFF – which self-cleans, has Slide&Hide®, a unique, fully disappearing oven door, and CircoTherm®, a smart, hot air function that allows you to bake on up to four levels – is key.

  4. The tap trends you should know about when renovating your kitchen

Comments Off on The tap trends you should know about when renovating your kitchen

    Mismatched colours

The days of choosing a single tap colour throughout your home may be gone with mismatched and contrasting colour choices trending this year.

Whether it’s a brass tap in the kitchen and a brushed gunmetal piece in your bathroom, or a black feature tap in your laundry – home renovators are testing the waters by combining different coloured taps in different areas.

Warm metallics are tipped to be the in-thing this season with brushed brass and neutral colour tones also said to be popular.

    Black accents

They’ve been a favourite in recent years and black taps are set to remain popular in 2023.

Black taps go with almost everything in a kitchen, including different types of benchtop materials or light fittings, can be used as a feature to create contrast and style.

And because of their ongoing popularity, there’s lots of styles and price points of black taps to choose from.

If you’re looking for products to match, NEFF’s graphite grey range goes perfectly with brushed gunmetal, while our classic stainless-steel ovens, including the Choice recommended Slide&Hide® oven, can make a bold contrast for brushed brass or black taps.

    Wall-mounted

The traditional sink-mounted tap continues to come in and out of fashion – but it’s the wall-mounted style that is having a moment in 2023.

Mounting your mixer or spout (or both) to the wall creates an illusion of more space at your sink and on your benchtop, and can act as a stylish feature too.

If you’re looking for other products that can be integrated or hidden to create more space, and Choice recommended

And if you’re opting for a wall-mounted tap, remember to consider the functionality of it too – such as if it is moveable, has an extendable head or can reach the sides of your sink.

    Full-service taps

And finally, there’s a growing preference from home renovators to include taps that provide instant hot or cold water.

Convenience is something we’re accustomed to in today’s age, and this extends to the fixtures in our kitchens.

Whether it’s for making a cup of tea or cooking a pot of pasta, instant water services are becoming more common in the modern .

  5. Different types of sinks for your next kitchen renovation

Comments Off on Different types of sinks for your next kitchen renovation

Here’s your guide to picking the perfect kitchen sink.

    Undermount

Undermount sinks are a safe and sleek bet in any kitchen. Their hidden nature means they look neat and won’t detract from your overall style be it modern, eclectic or industrial Undermount sinks don’t usually have an attached drying panel, meaning more bench space and less visual clutter – which can be good for apartments or smaller kitchens. However, you will likely have to invest in a drying mat or rack to put on the side. If you’re going for that barely there look – NEFF’s fully integrated dishwasher is a great addition too.

    Top Mount

Historically, top mount sinks were the common household style. And while they’re not as popular today, they’re still a practical choice when renovating a kitchen. With a perimeter to rest your soap or dishwashing liquid, and often a built-in panel for drying, top mount sinks can be fitted to most benchtops. And the visibility of the design means they can tie in with the aesthetics of your appliances. From traditional stainless steel to matte black and copper top mount sinks can pick up on other kitchen elements such as NEFF’s built-in stainless steel oven, a feature light or cabinetry door handles. Top mount sinks typically go with modern or traditional kitchen aesthetics, but can also work with other styles like minimalist or industrial looks.

    Farmhouse

They’ve been in vogue for a few years now, and the oversized farmhouse sink is still trending in kitchens across Australia. Taking inspiration from the Hampton’s style– which combines country aesthetics with modern elegance – the exposed front of the sink makes an instant statement piece. Farmhouse sinks are also highly practical, with extra space and durability too. They typically come as white sinks, grey sinks and black sinks

    Double Sink

Nowadays, most sinks come with the option of a double. And with greater space and double the capacity, they can be great for hiding your after-dinner dishes or drying them out of sight. If you’re someone who likes to rinse their dishes after a soapy wash, then a double sink might be for you!

    A tip from us…

When renovating your kitchen, it’s important to think about the location of your sink in comparison to other appliances – such as your dishwasher or oven. Consider where it will be easiest to rinse, stack or unstack your dishes (as well as where your plumbing is) for an efficient space. Depending on the layout of your space, this can differ. For example, if you’re building a new home, this may mean installing the sink on your island bench or a secondary sink in your butler’s pantry. If you live in an apartment, the centre of your one-wall bench may be more practical.

  6. 5 common kitchen renovation mistakes and how to avoid them

Comments Off on 5 common kitchen renovation mistakes and how to avoid them

    Not having a budget

The budget. It’s the number one thing to think about when undertaking a kitchen renovation – it guides your spending, informs your product purchases and keeps your project on track. But if you haven’t mapped out a budget and recorded your spending, it’s likely things will end up costing more than you intended. Our advice? Set up a spreadsheet or write down the estimated (or quoted) price for everything before you begin, including tradespeople, appliances, fixtures and fittings. Then, once underway, make note of the actual cost, so you can track how much you’ve actually spent. It’s also smart to add a buffer – just in case. If you need a hand budgeting, check out this article on how much a kitchen renovation costs

    Not locking in tradespeople early

Tradespeople are some of the most in-demand people out there – they’re always busy and there’s always more work to be done. That’s why it’s important to lock them in as early as possible, once you’ve determined out your renovation plans and budget. Ask for a quote from multiple tradespeople, then confirm with the one(s) you want.

Wondering if you can renovate your kitchen yourself? Make sure you have the relevant skills or qualifications, so nothing goes wrong. It can also be a good idea to make a renovation checklist of everything you need to organise, to help ensure nothing is overlooked!

    Not researching appliances

With so many appliances and new kitchen gadgets to choose from, it can be hard to know what’s best for you. Invest some time into researching and reading up on different appliances to see what fits with your wants and needs – not just what’s trending at the moment. Read reviews from other customers and compare different products using consumer sites like Choice. For example, NEFF’s built-in Slide&Hide oven is Choice recommended – meaning it’s backed and trusted by consumers. There’s more on our must-have appliances here

You can also attend one of our free NEFF product demonstrations to get a better understanding of how our appliances work. Book yours in today.

    Not including enough storage

You can never have too much storage – especially in the kitchen. Whether it’s somewhere to put your pots and pans or the good crockery you use once a year, there’s always room for more. But when your renovation is in full swing, considering the type and location of additional storage is easy to overlook. To avoid any cupboard-less dishes at the end, make sure you factor storage into your initial kitchen renovation plans. Count up how much storage you currently have, and factor in any items you’d like to put in a separate spot. This could be a simple open shelf or a series of overheads.

    Not choosing function over style

With so many products and appliances out there, it’s easy to get caught up in what looks best. But it’s important to remember that a kitchen renovation is an investment, so you want everything to last and serve you for years to come. To avoid disappointment, research every product you intend to purchase – from splashback tiles to your oven and benchtop. Understand the functionality of each piece, and question how durable it will be in the long run. For example, if you have children or like entertaining while you cook, you might opt for a hardy benchtop, such as stone. Or you may choose an induction cooktop, which are both efficient and safe to touch. There’s more on how to renovate a kitchen in this article

At the end of the day, your kitchen renovation should be about making a functional, practical and enjoyable space for you to cook and entertain. Do you research, include products that work for you and remember, planning is key.

  7. Trend alert: Add flare to your kitchen with vintage furniture

Comments Off on Trend alert: Add flare to your kitchen with vintage furniture

    Have a theme

It’s easy to get carried away when decorating your kitchen with vintage or eclectic furniture. Start by picking a theme – whether it’s a colour scheme or style. This will help ensure every item or element you include stays true to your overall aesthetic. For example, if you’re going for a rustic look, you might make a shelf out of timber, find some old metal hooks to hang your pots and pans or paint an old tap black. NEFF’s oven range in graphite grey complements this aesthetic perfectly.  If you want your kitchen to be colourful, you could favour pastel-coloured furniture or stick to items in different shades of green to tie everything together. Don’t forget to make a mood board (this can be done online or by cutting out examples of colours and designs you like) to get inspiration!

    Mix materials/textures

Combining a variety of materials in one space can be daunting, but when curated right, it’s really effective. Whether it’s wooden cupboards and a pressed-tin splashback, colourful ceramics or a feature wall of different picture frames – don’t be afraid to mix and match. Not only do eclectic materials and textures look good together, they can also provide your space with depth, character and practicality too.

This can apply to everything from your benchtop to your décor and appliances. If you have an eye for vintage furniture, you could mix and match the shapes and styles of your breakfast bar stools to create a feature within your kitchen. A great way to find such pieces is to scour your local op shop or vintage collector store – you’re bound to find a hidden gem!

You could also use your appliances to add a bit of flare, like combining NEFF’s built-in oven in stainless steel with a colourful kettle and toaster.

    Find space among the chaos

With lots going on visually, it can be smart to include a space of calm among the chaos. If you’re undertaking a kitchen renovation, you can factor this into your initial design, for example, by repurposing an old window and using it as a feature. But if you’re redecorating or working with an existing space, it can take some more creativity. This might mean placing an old sideboard in front of a blank wall, or clearing a corner for an old pot and plant. NEFF’s fully integrated dishwasher can aid with this by integrating directly into your cupboards, meaning you can’t tell it’s there! You can also reduce visual clutter by opting for combination appliances, such as the NEFF built-in Slide&Hide® oven with steam function or compact oven with microwave function

    Think about your layout

One of the biggest kitchen renovation tips out there is to think about your layout. The layout can make or break your kitchen – and you don’t want your space to feel cluttered or closed off. If you’re designing a kitchen from scratch, think about where certain items will go, what decorations or feature elements you’ll include and where you might need to put in a visual break. If you’re working with an existing layout, consider how big the items you’re purchasing or recycling are and where they will best fit. There’s nothing worse than having to scoot around an edgy island trolley that’s too big for its space! This can also extend to where you put your appliances, like NEFF’s induction cooktop, which fits seamlessly on a bench without detracting from your overall look.

  8. How to transform your investment property’s kitchen

Comments Off on How to transform your investment property’s kitchen

    Non-wearing benchtops

The bench is among the most high-traffic spots in a kitchen. From unpacking groceries, to preparing dinner, pouring drinks and doing work – a lot of moments centre around the bench. In a rental or investment property, it’s no different, which is why you want to ensure you pick a benchtop that will withstand the test of time. Some of the most common materials include:

    • Stone/Granite – super durable and heat resistant, easy to wipe down and maintain. However, stone benchtops are generally more expensive.

    • Laminate – not as long-lasting as others, but easy to clean. Laminate is also generally low cost, meaning you can replace it if it does get damaged.

    • Timber – if treated, timber is hardy and easy to clean. It’s also environmentally friendly and can be sanded or stained to refresh.

    Easy-to-clean furniture

Whether you’re buying kitchen stools or a new cover for the dining table chairs, easy-to-clean materials are a life saver. If your tenants or guests make a mess, materials like artificial leather or vinyl are relatively spill-friendly and can be cleaned with a wipe. Many covers be replaced if they rip or stain too. Bright and retro colours are also in at the moment, meaning you can have fun with your aesthetic while still picking items that are going to last.

    Sturdy dishwasher

Most modern homes have a dishwasher, and while you may not be the one using it – dishwashers can help keep your whole investment property clean and tidy. By installing a dishwasher, guests are encouraged to keep dirty dishes off your bench and throughout other areas of your home. And, if you’re supplying the crockery, a dishwasher can help keep your dishes sparkling clean and in good nick. Dishwashers can also add value to your kitchen, which could be helpful if you decide to sell or rent out. NEFF’s semi-integrated dishwasher is barely noticeable and comes with lots of great functions including noise reduction and a Chef 70 function for tough grime – something even your messiest houseguest will appreciate!

    Quality oven

There’s lots to love about a good oven – including in a holiday home or short-term rental. From providing your guests with an efficient way to cook and entertain, to maintaining value in the long run. A top-quality product like NEFF’s built-in oven with steam function also comes with a range of functions like its self-cleaning Pyrolytic Self-Cleaning function that reduces maintenance time (a big plus when you’re trusting someone else!).

    Sleek induction cooktop

And finally, if you’re updating the cooktop at your investment property, an induction cooktop is hard to beat. With no messy grill plates to clean, induction cooktops mean your guest can just wipe over and forget. NEFF’s vented induction cooktop has the added benefit of a built-in ventilation system, meaning you won’t have to install a bulky rangehood or rely on your guests to clean two pieces of kitchen equipment. How good is that!

  9. 6 kitchen renovation tips from a NEFF customer

Comments Off on 6 kitchen renovation tips from a NEFF customer

What was the hardest part about renovating your kitchen?

Organising all our trades in the right order was hard. Next time we would ideally use one company to do absolutely everything.

There are pros and cons to both ways – if the one team all works together then it’s brilliant. But if you choose a team and one of the trades gets held up, you don’t have the freedom to find a different one.

What was the best thing you did when renovating your kitchen?

The best thing we did was choosing good quality appliances. We were so happy with our choice of gas cooktop over induction and love the NEFF Slide&Hide ovens we installed. They just cook everything to perfection – we especially loved to cook lamb roasts. We also loved our integrated dishwasher and having a double sink in our island bench, as well as a deep single sink in the butler’s kitchen. Everything is just so practical and functional!

Start your kitchen renovation journey today with a quick phone call with one of our NEFF specialists.

What do you wish you knew before starting?

We wish we knew not to rely so heavily on individual trades to talk to each other.

There are so many trades involved in a kitchen renovation, from the designer to the cabinet maker, the electrician, plumber, stone mason, appliance supplier, builder, plasterer, tiler.

We wish we had researched all the regulations around installing appliances and had our finger on the pulse a little more ourselves.

We had a major issue with how close our gas cooktop was installed to the splashback and had to get a brand-new stone benchtop cut to meet building code.

Always check the specifications and regulations before purchasing or installing!

What’s something you would do differently next time?

Next time we would spend more time planning and sourcing the exact materials we want to use. It’s also important to speak to the builder or cabinet maker in the planning stage too.  Our last renovation was quite rushed, and we didn’t feel we had a decent amount of time to plan and talk through each element of the design including things like how deep the drawers were going to be. Every little detail matters!

For more planning inspiration, check out the 4 design trends tipped to dominate 2023.

Was your budget spot on, over or under?

Our budget was spot on – but we did make compromises to get there. This included not having overhead cabinetry in the main kitchen, only in the butler’s kitchen. We also saved by not having a waterfall stone bench on our island – and stuck with a thinner stone (20mm) so we could afford a nicer type from the premium range.  Purchasing our products and appliances on sale also helped us save on costs.

What’s your biggest piece of advice for other people renovating a kitchen?

Spend a decent amount of time in the designing and planning stage and think of all the practical and functional things you love about a kitchen you have been in, if it’s in a friend’s kitchen or family, or even better, think about kitchens you’ve been in that don’t function well and think about how they would work better.   Think of the small unthought of things, will your upper cabinets go to the ceiling, or do you need bulk heads installed?  We also purchased all our appliances, taps and sinks prior to even beginning the cabinetry design so that it was all there to give to the cabinet maker to build around the sizes.  Think about if a double sink or single sink better for you, do you cook a lot and want a larger 900mm oven or 2 stacked 600mm ovens, do you want these ovens side by side or stacked? Think of aesthetics but also practically and spend money on quality appliances.
