Kitchen benchtops: Things to consider and 5 of our favourite options

Your benchtop will be getting a lot of use throughout the lifespan of your kitchen, so considering whether it will stand the test of time in terms of style and durability is necessary. Some other things you'll want to consider include:    Price: some materials are going to be more expensive than others, so make sure you’re aware of what your budget is and what you can afford. Cheap doesn’t always mean it’s the right choice!   Quality: will this material chip and crack, or will it stand the test of time? Durability is a key consideration, particularly with growing families that may be a little bit rough with the kitchen over the years.  Maintenance: does it require regular maintenance, or does it just need a wipe every now and then? Marble benchtops are quite easy to clean and maintain, while timber is more likely to get weathered if not properly maintained. You may also need specialist products to maintain the look of stainless steel – so ongoing care should be a part of your consideration.   Versatility: can the material also be used for things like flooring, backsplashes and walls if required to complete the look of your kitchen? This will often come down to whether you want your kitchen benchtop to be the standout piece or to be one look – think of how the colours, textures or finish will play off other elements in your room to create interesting juxtapositions or a really cohesive look.    Now that you know what areas to look for in a kitchen benchtop material, here are some of our favourites of the moment, and a few suggestions on appliances you can incorporate into your benchtop design to tie it all together.   Quartz benchtops  Your kitchen benchtop should be easy to clean, and quartz benchtops can be easily wiped down with a soapy cloth or sponge. They're durable and low maintenance, so you can spend more time doing the things that matter most to you. To make your benchtop stand out, you can incorporate an induction cooktop with TwistPadFire control into the quartz benchtop to take your cooking to the next level! A darker quartz will help hide any stains or scratches that may appear over the years, so keep this in mind when selecting a colour.  Porcelain benchtops   If you're looking for a strong benchtop that won't stain, then porcelain benchtops are worth considering. They are unlikely to be affected by liquid spills, and they're tough to scratch or scuff. Porcelain won't fade in direct sunlight (useful if you have a skylight above your benchtop), and they can be recycled down the track. You can get a range of prints on porcelain, too, if you're looking to make it look like another material to suit your kitchen design.    Our vented cooktop combines the convenience of the NEFF Induction cooktop with a built-in ventilation system, meaning you save on vertical space and remove the need for a separate rangehood. We love this style of cooktop with porcelain benchtops because it maintains sleek lines, while modernizing the materials.  Marble benchtops  Marble benchtops are known for their ability to stay cool, which makes it an ideal material for those long summer cook-ups. No two marble benchtops are the same, either, thanks to the imperfections that may be present in individual marble slabs. Choosing the slab that's perfect for your kitchen is half the fun, and with a good sealer, marble benchtops can be cleaned without any fuss. If you're looking for a way to elevate the design of your kitchen, why not incorporate a gas cooktop into your marble benchtop?    Click here to see how a real NEFF customer has used a marble counter in their kitchen to bring to life their monochrom aesthetic.  Timber benchtops  If you're looking for a feature piece in your kitchen, then a timber benchtop can help add to the rustic look of your home. To keep it in good shape, apply a coat of natural oil when you have the time. Timber benchtops are affordable and can be crafted as once-off pieces, and can even be more environmentally friendly. They store carbon forever, and if you ever go to renovate your kitchen again, the timber benchtop can be re-purposed to give it a new lease on life. Elevated ovens can make potentially rustic kitchen designs feel more modern, particularly when they include the Slide&Hide© door or steam functionality. The NEFFLight can also add some brightness to your room, allowing you to see your baking as it happens.   Stainless steel benchtops  Chefs love stainless steel benchtops, and it's easy to see why. Stainless steel benchtops are a favourite in commercial kitchens, and they're becoming more popular when health-minded people go to renovate their kitchen at home. Stainless steel benchtops are easy to clean and heat-resistant, meaning they're perfect for a kitchen that's going to be used regularly. They're also hygienic and simple to keep clean, so you'll be exposed to fewer germs floating whenever you're in the kitchen.   An electric cooktop can help complete the minimalist design of a stainless steel benchtop if that's what you're looking for from your kitchen renovation!   About NEFF  NEFF is a German-engineered kitchen appliance brand, with a product range that includes ovens, cooktops, rangehoods, coffee machines and dishwashers designed to make life in the kitchen a daily pleasure. For people who love to cook, NEFF gives you the tools to create meaningful connections, express your creativity and make memories. 6 unique kitchen elements to add personality to your kitchen renovation

But here’s the good news, folks. A stylish kitchen doesn’t have to be a brand-spankin’ new one. Many designers these days are instead reaching for the sorts of fixtures, finishes and stylistic flourishes that bring with them a well-worn and lived-in appeal. Call it rustic charm, boho chic, modern farmhouse or just call it stylish.   In this article we share five ways to cook up a new kitchen look – without throwing the old one out.  Update your splashback with decorative tiles  There’s a reason why colourful or patterned tiles have been decorating kitchens since 4000 BC. That reason is instant personality. When chosen carefully (and used sparingly), a tiled splashback, floor or small slice of wall can enliven the most anonymous ‘cooking space’ to create a kitchen that is truly your own. And, for the most part, it can be pretty cheap too.  Brighten the walls with a lick of paint  While neutral or monochrome schemes are likely to have a more timeless appeal, a few well-thought-out splashes of colour can have huge ripple effect on the feeling of your entire home. Plus, it’s quick and economical.  Which colour should you choose? Well, it all comes down to taste, of course -not to mention your kitchen’s unique size, shape, contents and lighting. But it might be worth considering earthy tones, such as rich and warming clay, dark colours like inky blues and blacks to add drama or pale, cool shades of green for a calming effect.    Give life back to second-hand items   Op shops, antique stores or even your own garage can unearth wonders - from legitimate antiques to sturdy basics that can be transformed with a bit of varnish or paint. The key is to shop with imagination – you really can create some truly unique statement pieces if you have the vision to see what’s possible.   Have a light-bulb moment  That’s right – changing your lighting can do wonders in shifting the mood and aesthetic of the room. Why not trade in overhead fluorescents for a warmer orange bulb, or add to the ambience with a selection of lamps? Even fairy lights in jars or wound across door frames can add a bit of mystique to your cooking space and highlight the colours of your appliances in a new way.   Change the kitchen handles Don’t think your kitchen can handle a total makeover? Well, why not stick to just the handles – a simple and understated way to spotlight new colours and textures around the room. From doors to cupboards, and even the surrounding furniture, a few new handles can bring a whole new feeling to the room. Why not experiment with a statement colour like a pastel green or yellow, or a new bold texture like cast iron or wood? Speaking of colour lifts…   Give grey a go for something different  While stainless steel has been a popular choice with NEFF appliances for years, recent customers have been loving the option to have graphite grey strips and handles. This darker shade adds a touch of modernity and style to kitchens of any colour.  A dark, sleek, neutral colour that goes with pretty much anything, NEFF’s Graphite Grey range sports a darker shade of strips and handles, which are as delightful to look at as they are to touch. While it’s a colour that doesn't scream out for praise and attention, we promise that’s just what it will get.   You can discover more about NEFF appliances and our unique features here.  You can attend a free NEFF demonstration near you to learn more about the full range of NEFF products and see these in person for yourself to best understand how they can bring your dream kitchen to life. Equip your kitchen like a pro with these must-have appliances

Your everyday oven  It’s where the magic (and the mac and cheese) happens, so it’s important that your oven allows you to explore new recipes and make the most of your kitchen experience. For example, NEFF’s state-of-the-art hot air system, CircoTherm® lets you cook a number of completely different dishes at the exact same time.   Guaranteed to heat up quickly, retain moisture and avoid intermingling flavours, the system works by drawing air in from outside the oven via a powerful stainless steel fan. The result not only arrives at your desired temperature more quickly, it ensures that temperature is evenly distributed throughout the oven. Your bread will taste like bread and your chicken will taste like chicken. It’s a whole menu in one oven all at the same time!  A quality steam oven  There’s a reason why cooking steamers have been used for centuries throughout the world. And it’s the same reason why Fullsteam ovens are recommended by chefs.   Put simply, a steam oven combines baking with steaming in just one appliance, a process which allows you to add moisture to your cooking without boiling or waterlogging your food. Great for baking, roasting or slow cooking, steam ovens retain the natural textures, flavours and nutrients in your food and reduce the need to use oil. They make vegetables tasty and retain colour and flavour, and meat a whole lot more succulent.   Involving just one litre water container, the ovens are very intuitive and make everyday cooking easy and healthy. To refill, simply press a button to open the front panel, remove the container and turn on the tap.  Then, yes, it’s full steam ahead.    [embed]https://youtu.be/e_UVe34wyxc[/embed] A Warming Drawer  Warming Drawers might seem like a superfluous addition to your kitchen, but they can actually come in pretty handy when you're dealing with complex recipes or preparing a multi-course meal.   How many times has your oven gone ‘ding’ while you’re still waiting to hear from your doorbell? Designed to help guests enjoy your cooking, even if they arrive late, NEFF’s warming drawers keep plates and food warm until the moment you’re ready to serve them, ensuring every ingredient tastes as it should.      Flexibility is key  Having appliances that don’t just serve one function is super handy if you’re low on space or want to experiment with new recipes. For example, NEFF VarioSteam oven combines conventional hot air cooking with an extra injection of steam to ensure that the food doesn’t dry out.   With three different levels of steam, designed for baking, roasting or heating, a VarioSteam oven contains everything you need to create crustier breads and crispier roasts.   NEFF’s compact combi-microwave ovens also serves a double function, with a three-shelf interior that can be used for both conventional oven cooking or a quick microwave meal. It’s all the features, taking up half the space.     Still have more questions?  Book in to attend a free NEFF demonstration near you to learn more about the full range of NEFF products, or explore our key products here.    About NEFF   NEFF is a German-engineered kitchen appliance brand, with a product range that includes ovens, cooktops, rangehoods, coffee machines and dishwashers designed to make life in the kitchen a daily pleasure. For people who love to cook, NEFF gives you the tools to creative meaningful connections, express your creativity and make memories. Kitchen design ideas for a small kitchen

Remove upper cabinets   The idea of removing the upper cabinets in your kitchen might give you a feeling of dread, but open storage such as shelves gives an airier and more spacious feel in your kitchen. Wire panel shelving is a great option as it maximises storage by adapting to your kitchen’s needs. You can add in or take away shelves, hang glasses upside down and even introduce a wine rack. When space is at a premium you need to make sure every inch counts.  If you’re not quite ready to relinquish your upper cabinets, you could replace the solid fronts with glass. This pulls the eye past the cabinet frames and into depths of the cabinets, so the walls feel farther away.   Extend tiles from countertop to ceiling  Add height and interest by covering the entire wall from counter to ceiling with tiles. A tall backsplash can draw eyes up the wall and make the entire room seem taller. It’s a great way to either maximise the effect of a high ceiling or create the illusion of one to make the space look lighter. Make sure to choose plain tiles if you decide to go down this route and in a neutral colour or this design idea can have the opposite effect.   Invest in a Rolling Kitchen Cart  You may not have the space to expand your countertops or add a full island, so think about bringing in a slim rolling kitchen cart or bar cart to hold regularly used items or serve as extra counter space. Even a narrow one can work as a spot to set tools and ingredients on while you cook. You can then easily move it out of the way when you aren't using it.    Use cabinet lighting  Lighting is vital for creating the illusion of a larger kitchen. The more light available, the bigger the space will feel. Natural light is preferable, so if you have the opportunity to put in skylights or glass doors this will make your kitchen instantly feel larger.  Alternatively, add lights underneath wall cupboards or at the base of floor units. Make sure that you don’t use a lampshade that decreases the amount of light. Spotlights are ideal for maximum light.    Buy an oven with steam or microwave functionality  A great way to cut down on the number of appliances in your kitchen is to purchase one that can do multiple jobs at once. Our NEFF Built-in oven with steam function is great example as it allows you to bake, roast or steam, meaning there’s no need to fill your kitchen with bulky rice cookers or vegetable steamers. Or if you are a regular microwave user, you could opt for our NEFF oven with integrated microwave functionality.  Zone with flooring  Contrary to popular belief, small kitchens can still be used as kitchen/dining spaces. And through clever zoning you can make the room feel like two separate rooms without compromising on space.  Choose two distinct flooring styles and use them to trick the eye into thinking that there are two spaces. A patterned option is best for the kitchen as it’s more energising and helps disguise spillages. Meanwhile, calming neutral styles work well for a relaxed dining zone.   Get creative with corners  A tiny kitchen still has to cater for even the most basic of food prep and serving, meaning it’s key to use every last bit of available space by being savvy with the design solutions.  Ensure the units are as tall as physically possible to elongate the space. Making the most of magic corners and other clever mechanisms will also help use every millimetre of space.  Keep the personal touches small  While personal touches such as trinkets and windowsill pots in your kitchen reflect your personality and make the space feel like home, having too many of them scattered throughout the room will make a small kitchen feel too busy and more claustrophobic.  Select your favourite ornaments and arrange them on a shelf and frame any special artwork. A pinboard, chalkboard or mesh noticeboard can also create a single space for notes rather than a messy fridge surface, giving a feeling of order. The perfect 3 course Easter lunch

Nothing beats spending quality time with loved ones over a holiday. And with many of us leading busy lives, sitting down to share a meal can feel like a luxury, so why not maximise your time with your family with our perfect 3 course Easter lunch? There’s no large hams or roasts here to consume hours of your time, instead you can rely on quick and easy Easter recipes.     Starter    Chilli and Lime Grilled Prawns  Freshly grilled fresh prawns are partnered with the carby goodness of potatoes and a bright, green pop of asparagus in this hearty starter that packs a flavourful punch. Fish sauce, garlic, coriander and parsley are ideal dish partners, bringing out the nuanced scents and flavour profiles of the herbs and vegetable to perfection.   The grilling process is fast and easy thanks to the speedy, responsive NEFF Oven grill function. It’ll take you approximately 30 minutes to chop, marinate and prepare the ingredients, but this is really an easy dish to make and perfect for when you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen.     Or    Tomato Bruschetta with Creamy Garlic and Herb Cream Cheese  Bruschetta makes a great shared entrée and is even better when served with a homemade ‘Boursin’. Boursin is a creamy garlic and herb cream cheese that goes so well with ripe juicy tomatoes.  For this recipe, we start by making the Boursin, combining Neufchatel cheese (cream cheese) with a delicious combination of oil, garlic, herbs and lemon zest, blending until smooth. Next, it’s on to the bruschetta topping, where tomatoes steal the show, amplified by the addition of garlic, basil and oil. Then it’s time to grill the bread before spreading on the cheese and topping with the tomato mixture. Perfection!  This recipe will take you just 15 minutes of prep time and 5 minutes of cooking making it a super speedy option.     Main  Cheese and Herb Crusted Fish with Pear and Spinach Salad  This recipe for baked white fish with a lick-the-plate parmesan and herb crust is so easy that it’s one of our favourite fish recipes. Ling fillets or other thick white fish work best here, and the dish is complemented by a very simple pear and spinach salad, which can be prepared while the fish is cooking.   This recipe is perfect for a gathering because it can be made up in advance, kept in the fridge, and baked a few minutes before you want to serve it, leaving more time for spending with your guests!    Or     Smoked Salmon Pasta Bake  Pasta bakes are a perennial favourite at NEFF. Easy to prepare, and always satisfying, they’re perfect for any occasion from a mid-week dinner to a relaxed shared meal.   In this recipe, we give an uptown twist on this old favourite with the addition of hot smoked salmon finished with a buttery ciabatta crumbs and cheesy brie crust. Sundried tomato, leeks and a creamy sauce add to this wonderfully flavoursome dish. Serve with a Green salad or steamed greens.     Dessert    Crème Egg Tart  What would Easter be without a classic Crème Egg? For an even tastier take, we’ve created this family-favourite Crème Egg Tart, which features a buttery base and a gooey, white chocolate filling. Start by creating the classic pastry bottom, making sure to use a fluted tart pan with removable base, and bake it blind. Then combine the filling ingredients, melting in a saucepan before whisking with eggs and pouring into the baked base. Gently arrange the Crème Eggs and bake until the filling is just set.  A slice of this showstopping Easter tart with a dollop of cream is the perfect way to finish your meal.    Cooking tip  Both main options and the dessert are cooked using the unique NEFF oven CircoTherm® setting. Say goodbye to rotating your trays and hello to perfectly even cooking results every time. Irish Soda Bread

Place the flour, salt, pepper & bi carb soda in a bowl. Add the cheese & mix well to combine the ingredients. Combine the milk & the yogurt & mix well. Reserve approximately one tablespoon of this mix to glaze the loaf.   Preheat oven Bread Baking to 220°C with a high level of steam (see note if you do not have a steam oven) and line the universal pan with baking paper. Make a well in the centre of the flour mix and add the remaining milk and yogurt mixture. Mix well to just combine and form a soft dough.   Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead gently to form a smooth ball. Be careful not to over work the dough. Place the dough onto the prepared tray and cut a cross into the top of the dough, cutting approximately two thirds of the way down into the loaf. Glaze with the reserved milk and yogurt mix. Combine the seeds and sprinkle over the loaf.  Insert the temperature probe horizontally through the loaf (see note). Cook on shelf position 3 and set the core temperature to 94°C. Set the oven timer for 10 minutes then reduce the oven temperature to 190°C and reduce the steam to a medium level. Continue cooking until the probe registers the set temperature.

Special Fried Rice

Combine the rice and water in the small solid steamer tray. Steam on 100°C for 16 minutes. Spread the rice onto a tray to cool.     Heat a little of the oil in a flat based wok or skillet. Whisk the eggs then pour into the pan, cook over induction setting 7 until the egg is cooked through, remove from the wok, roll up then cut into 1cm slices. Set aside.    Heat the remaining oil and stir fry the onion, carrot, capsicum and bacon for 5-6 minutes. Add the ginger, garlic and peas and cook a further 2 minutes. Toss through the cooled rice and egg with the light soy and sesame oil and continue cooking for another 3-5 minutes or until the rice is well heated through. Toss through the spring onion and bean sprouts, season to taste and serve immediately.
