How long does a kitchen renovation take?
While there’s no set timeframe, a typical kitchen renovation can take anywhere between six to 12 weeks to complete, depending on the size, complexity and readiness of your project. If your kitchen is part of a larger renovation, like a whole-house renovation, it may take even longer. Some of the key timings you’ll need to allow for include:
Permits (2-4 weeks)
Applying for a planning or building permit, if required, is one of the first things you should do. Without a permit, your renovation cannot begin. The sooner you apply, the sooner you can start your renovation. But even if you have all the required information, including plans and specifications, you may still be asked to provide additional information. As a general rule, allow two to four weeks for your permit to be received, processed and approved.
Tradespeople ( 2-6 weeks)
They’re the biggest piece in the renovation puzzle, so locking in tradespeople as early as possible is essential when it comes to getting your kitchen renovation underway. Make contact with a couple of different tradespeople or businesses and compare their quotes, inclusions and availabilities to see what you feel most comfortable with. This is especially important nowadays after years of disruption to the building industry, with supply chain issues and staff shortages running rife. This process may take anywhere between two and six weeks to nail down. And remember, make sure you engage qualified, certified, tradespeople who are registered with their relevant industry body.
Appliance orders ( Instantly to 6 weeks)
There’s nothing worse than picking out an appliance or product you love, only to realise it’s sold out or has a months-long wait time. That’s why checking out, and perhaps pre-ordering, such items, like a NEFF flex induction cooktop, can be a smart idea. At NEFF, we offer phone consults to help pinpoint the exact product for your needs, and your local NEFF dealer can help guide you with timings and ordering, too. Demolition (few days to few weeks)
If you’re completely gutting your space, or taking out old appliances or benchtops, you will need to factor in some time for demolition. This may be something you choose to undertake yourself, or bring in a specialist team for. If completing the demolition yourself, remember to have the appropriate protective gear and don’t forget important safety measures, like turning the water or power off before starting. This can take anywhere between a few days to a few weeks to complete.
Rough in (few days to few weeks)
Now it’s time for the exciting part! Once your space is prepped and ready, your tradespeople can begin work. Rough in works may include things like electrical work, plumbing and carpentry. If you’re coordinating the project yourself, make sure you have an open line of communication with your tradespeople and are across who needs to come in when. It’s a good idea to have a written plan of approximate dates, so you can keep other tradespeople in the loop about when they will be needed and any dependencies that might affect timings.
Fit off (few days to few weeks)
The final stage of your renovation will be the fit off. This is where each tradesperson will return to connect appliances, such as an oven (NEFF’s built-in oven is always a good choice) or dishwasher (our semi-integrated dishwasher ensures your space always looks sleek) and ensure everything is finalised and ready for you to use. You may want to have a thorough look and ask any final questions of your tradespeople during fit off.
Do I need a building permit for a kitchen renovation?
Not all kitchen renovations will require a permit. However, if you are changing anything structural, such as a supportive beam, or extending or adding on an extra space, you will likely need to seek approval first. Before starting, you should speak with your local council or a qualified building inspector to see if you need a permit for your works.
How much does a kitchen renovation cost?
Depending on how big your renovation (and kitchen) is, how expensive your fixtures, fittings and appliances are and the type of tradespeople you engage, the cost of a kitchen renovation can vary. Before commencing, make sure you write out every possible cost including products, tradespeople and materials, plus things like permits and skip bin hire. Can I renovate my kitchen myself?
If you have a trade background, or are generally handy around the house, you may be able to undertake some of the renovation yourself. But this will likely depend on your skill level, how much time you have available and the extent of renovation needed. It’s important to note that if you’re not capable of renovating your space to a high and safe standard, you should not attempt to do so. Kitchen renovations can be hard work and at the end of the day, you want to ensure your space looks and operates at its best.
Happy renovating!
