  1. 5 things that will add value to your home if you decide to sell

Comments Off on 5 things that will add value to your home if you decide to sell

    Benchtop

A new benchtop can instantly transform your kitchen. And as one of the main surfaces in your home, it’s something a buyer is likely to notice (if you decide to sell) too. Whether you’re replacing an old one or installing a new material, think about how your new benchtop fits with your space, how durable it is and how it might look to a prospective purchaser. Some common materials include laminate and engineered stone, which are easier to clean, while timber benchtops look and feel natural.

    Oven

Have you ever inspected a home, opened the oven and turned up your nose? Chances are a potential buyer will too. Ovens are an essential in any kitchen – and if yours has seen better days, or is losing its efficiency, it may be worth investing in a new one. Whether it’s a traditional oven, or a compact or hybrid appliance (which can also be used as a second oven), there are plenty of options for both size and functionality. NEFF’s built-in oven with added steam function has features like the Slide & Hide® disappearing door, Circo Therm, which lets you bake on up to four levels and a Pyrolytic Self-Cleaning function for your convenience.

    Dishwasher

In today’s day and age, the dishwasher is an essential appliance in the home. And when buying a new property, it’s one of the first things people will look for in a kitchen. The convenience of a dishwasher just makes life that little bit easier – especially if you invest in a good quality one. And with so many shapes, sizes and finishes to choose from nowadays – including free-standing, semi-integrated and fully integrated, you’re guaranteed to find one for your space. If you’re in the market for a new one, NEFF’s semi-integrated dishwasher fits seamlessly into your cabinetry to give a clean and finished look, but has a control pad on the outside for maximum functionality. Here’s a video where we look into dishwashers and which one is right for you.

    Splashback

Splashback trends change as fast as seasons so while you might not be able to keep up, there’s a value in investing in one that’s classy, practical and likely to withstand the test of time. Two of the most common materials are tiles and glass. Tiles are easy to clean and can be tessellated or arranged to make a focal point of your space, while glass can be coloured or installed in front of a print or picture. And if put together well, a nice splashback can elevate your kitchen or be made into a feature. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s functional for your cooking needs, too.

    Induction cooktop

When it comes to the longevity of your kitchen, and your home’s resale potential, induction cooktops have real benefits – especially when compared to gas. They heat up instantly and can boil a pot of water in four minutes. And with no flame or metal burner platers, they’re easy to clean too. So, whether you (or a potential buyer) are a home chef or just like an efficient kitchen, induction cooktops are a useful, and increasingly common, inclusion. With NEFF’s induction cooktop you have the added bonus of being able to place your pots or pans anyway on the surface and the cooktop will heat up accordingly. How’s that for efficient?

  2. Your kitchen renovation checklist

Comments Off on Your kitchen renovation checklist

    Design mood-board

When planning a kitchen renovation, the best place to start is with a mood-board (either a virtual one or a physical board) of inspiration and ideas that fit with the look or aesthetic of your home. This might include everything from colours and appliances to photos of other kitchens you’ve seen and may want to emulate. Do you like the look of a modern Hamptons-style kitchen? Or perhaps you want to change things up with a pop of colour? Are their certain appliances on your wish-list? Whatever your style, having something to base your design off – and show tradespeople and interior designers (if you’re using them) – can be a super helpful benchmark.

    Kitchen Layout

It’s the heart of the home and with so much time spent in the kitchen, getting the configuration and layout of things like appliances and cupboards right is essential. Did you know there’s actually a lot of thought that goes into the practicality of a kitchen’s design? For example, making sure the sink, cooktop and refrigerator are easily accessible from one another (called the kitchen work triangle). But you’ll also need to think about where to put cupboards and if you’ll have an island or wrap-around bench. Some of the most common kitchen layouts include island, galley, U-shaped and L-shaped kitchens.  If you have to shift any structural walls or beams, you may need to seek approval from a building authority. For more information, visit your local council’s website.

    Kitchen bench

One of the key elements of a kitchen is the bench. Whether it’s a big island bench or a small one-wall set-up, every kitchen needs adequate space to prepare, cook, create and entertain. The type of bench you include may depend on the size of your kitchen, or how much you like to cook. Some things to consider when designing your bench space include the size, shape, and material you will use. Remember, you want a bench that provides enough space, and is durable, for your needs. You should also think about where any appliances including a microwave, cooktop or sink will go, and how much bench space these items will take up.

    Cabinetry

Kitchen cabinetry plays an important role in the overall function of your space – from storage to accessibility and aesthetics. So when planning what they will look like and where you will place them, it’s important to consider your wants and needs. For example, making sure you can store and reach items easily may be necessary for some people, while others may be more concerned with the look or style. If you have a smaller space, you may want to consider how best to optimise your kitchen cabinetry – such as by using overhead cupboards or drawers.

    Floors

When it comes to choosing the flooring for your kitchen, durability and ease of cleaning are key. We all know kitchens can easily become messy – from food crumbs and splatters to dirt from shoes, so you want to make sure your flooring will withstand the times.  Some popular materials include floorboards and tiles. You may also want to consider how the flooring in your kitchen matches the rest of your house, or any future floor renovations you may complete.

    Appliances

Every new kitchen needs some quality appliances and when you’re renovating, there’s no better time to upgrade or invest. Are you someone who loves to cook and would benefit from a steam oven? Or are you tossing up between an induction cooktop or gas? There are plenty of options out there, including hybrid and compact appliances for smaller spaces or larger options for kitchens with more space.

    Lighting

Last but certainly not least, lighting! The right amount of light can really elevate your cooking experience and make mealtime much easier. From ensuring you can read a recipe to proving enough light to see when your cooking is perfectly baked, lighting matters. Depending on how much natural light your kitchen gets, you might find you need more or less artificial light. Think about where you stand to prepare, cook and clean and how much light is needed, and what type. Some options include downlights, pendant lights and strip lighting (often used at the top of a splashback).

  3. How much does a kitchen renovation cost?

Comments Off on How much does a kitchen renovation cost?

As the heart of the home, the kitchen is perhaps the most important room in the house. And given we spend so much time cooking and entertaining, it’s likely it will also become one of the first spaces in need of a little love. But what are the big costs? And where can you save a few dollars? Here’s everything you need to know about the costs associated with renovating your kitchen.

    BIG TICKET ITEMS

    Project manager ($$$$+)

Having someone oversee your project can save you time and stress and mitigate problems you may not foresee. Project managers are experts in renovating and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to making sure all your ducks are in a row, especially pre-renovation. They can often also recommend trusted tradies for the task, too.

    Tradies ($$$$+)

The labour (which accounts for demolition, disposal and installation) forms the framework for the project, so expect a chunk of your budget to be allocated to this part to ensure the job is done properly and professionally by certified builders, electricians, plumbers, tilers and cabinet makers. Each tradesperson will charge a different rate and for different things, so make sure you ask for a quote first, and compare it with others, so you have an idea of costs from the beginning.

    Permits ($$$+)

Many projects will require permits before starting that those less seasoned in renovating may not know about. Check with your local council or a qualified building inspector to see if you need a permit for your works.

Tip: It’s also important to leave a buffer for unexpected costs that may arise during the initial stages of the renovation, for example, if the wall tiles are removed you may discover that plasterboard needs to be repaired which will incur an additional cost.

    Fixtures, fittings and appliances ($$$-$$$$+)

    MEDIUM TICKET ITEMS

    Materials ($$$+)

Firstly, it’s important to note that renovating today compared to three years ago is very different, thanks to COVID-19. The domino effects the pandemic has caused are still being felt by pretty much every industry. With this in mind, here’s a few tips to help you decide where to focus your budget on this part of the project:

    • Cabinetry: Outlying money for good quality cabinetry will enable you to use space efficiently in the kitchen. You can get 50% more storage out of a drawer than a cupboard so this is an area where you shouldn’t cut corners (no pun intended!). That’s not to say you need 30 drawers in your new kitchen. The trick is to have fewer yet make them deeper.
    • Benchtops: They’re the most used surface in the kitchen, so investing in a quality benchtop now will save you in the future by not having to replace it. But again, be strategic. This might mean using a more forgiving, cost-effective composite stone for the heavy-duty cooking and sink areas, but then having higher maintenance feature stones or timber benchtops in areas where it’ll be appreciated without the risk of wear and tear.
    • Flooring: Although the kitchen is a high-traffic area, you can save on flooring without compromising on quality. Your flooring should be hard-wearing, easy to clean and maintenance-free. Some great cost-effective options include ground concrete, terrazzo flooring and even general tiles, which can often be a cost-friendly yet are hard-wearing and stain-resistant option.

    SMALLER TICKET ITEMS

    Fixtures and fittings ($$+)

Hardware is a great way to save as there are so many options out there so you can get some great-looking handles and knobs on a budget without compromising on your overall aesthetic.

    • Doorhandles: Hardware is a great way to save a few dollars, and with many options out there it’s easy to find great-looking handles or knobs online or at second-hand stores without compromising on your overall aesthetic.
    • Lighting: There’s no denying that kitchen lighting is a hugely functional consideration, however, you can still achieve good quality, high-impact lighting for relatively low cost. Look around and research little-known lighting places that more often than not will have a show-stopping piece/s at an affordable price.
    • Décor: Adding décor to your kitchen is a great way to give your space personality and character – and with so many homeware stores, websites and DIY options available, it’s easy to shop around to get the best price for what you want.

At the end of the day, it’s important not to over-capitalise on your kitchen in a way that affects your resale value (should you choose to sell in the future). That’s why it’s important to think carefully about what you do and don’t prioritise in line with your budget when starting to plan your kitchen renovation.

  4. How to design a tidy but functional one wall kitchen

Comments Off on How to design a tidy but functional one wall kitchen

Perfectly combining minimalism and functionality, the one wall kitchen has long been a space-saving design choice in homes and apartments. But how do you design a space that works for you?

We’ve done the research you need to get all the answers.

With one wall you should build up

If you’re limited for space on the ground, build up. There are plenty of ways you can create useful, vertical spaces in the kitchen, such as including lots of overhead cupboards. Not only do overhead cupboards look sleek and tidy, but they also minimise the need to store items on your bench or the likelihood of overcrowding your existing storage.

Another handy tip is to add in a hanging station for pots and pans above your bench or stove. This can create more room in your cupboards and draws and works as a feature in your kitchen, too. Or if you love to cook with fresh herbs, try installing a vertical garden wall to hang your favourite garnishes from, instead of sitting them on the bench.

NEFF’s extensive built-in oven range can be stacked on top of one another and at chest height, too, giving you more space for cupboards underneath your bench and making cooking even more convenient.

Include as much bench space as possible

In short, the more bench, the better.

If you’ve got a generous-sized wall to work with, consider extending your kitchen the whole way (or as far as possible) so you can increase the length of your bench. The aesthetic of the minimal kitchen design remains, but you’re afforded more space to prepare, cook and clean up.

    Have an under-bench sink

It’s a simple choice but having an under-bench sink with no drainer can really increase the sense of space in your kitchen.

Under-bench sinks are much less intrusive to look at, blending in with the rest of your benchtop. And instead of having a permanent stainless steel drainer, purchase a drying rack or mat that you can easily pack up and put away when not in use.

    Choose hybrid appliances

Another way to minimise the clutter in your kitchen is picking products with multiple functions, such as the NEFF built-in oven with microwave function. This double-trouble product is the ultimate way to cut down on the number of appliances needed in your kitchen – and is especially helpful if you’re limited for space.

    Integrate everything with your cupboards

And lastly, perhaps one of the biggest things you can do to make your one-wall kitchen neat but functional is including products you can integrate with your existing cupboards, like fridges, dishwashers and microwaves.

Our fully integrated dishwasher range allows you to integrate your dishwasher into your cabinetry and hide the appliance seamlessly behind a cupboard door.  Add personal flair with custom handles or make use of features like Door Open Assist, which let you easily open your dishwasher with a gentle touch.

  5. Things to consider when choosing your kitchen splashback and our 5 favourite materials to choose from

Comments Off on Things to consider when choosing your kitchen splashback and our 5 favourite materials to choose from

So, what sort of splashback might best suit your kitchen? In this article, we’ll help you find out.

    Safety first!

Your first consideration has nothing to do with aesthetics. Above all else, a splashback must be non-combustible (i.e., unlikely to burst into flames). You can also burn your fingers on a material which get very hot (such as glass and steel) if it’s too close to the cooktop, so be sure to separates your splashback from the nearest gas burner by at least 20cm.

Safety in your kitchen should be your top priority and our Induction Cooktop offers safety features such as child lock and FlexInduction features, which automatically detects the number, size and shape of the pots and pans used and heats up precisely where it’s needed. There’s also the intuitive TwistPadFire® that also allows you to get precise control and heat over all cooking zones, enhancing the cooking experience and safety of your kitchen.

    Size and shape second

Consideration number two is also largely practical: what size and shape of splashback will best protect your wall? Standard kitchen splashback usually measure about 600x700x0.6mm. You can always choose something bigger (or less rectangular) if your kitchen aesthetic demands it, but any attempt to add something much smaller will probably result in a stained, dirty wall.

    Texture time

Ok, now for the fun part! What do you want your splashback to look like? A big, bold statement? Something more muted? Does your kitchen need a dramatic focal point? Or a surface that just subtly blends in?

Whatever ‘look’ you decide you want, you will be spoiled for choice with all sorts of colours, patterns and pictures available in stores, as well as through retailers online. (You can even mix and match random tiles, if you want. And there’s no rule that says they all need to be the same shape and size. Or even the same material or texture).

To make your way through the wide world of choice, we suggest that you begin by picking a material. There are five major paths to go down.

    Porcelain / ceramic

Probably the most popular choice, ceramic tiles have been a kitchen staple since the time of ancient Rome. And there are good reasons for that. They absorb heat, are easy to clean, are cheap to make and come in all sorts of patterns.

Subway tiles (essentially narrow white rectangles, stacked horizontally) are the ‘classic’ kitchen splashback look, but don’t be afraid to experiment with a more geometric design – or ‘do as the Romans do’ and get a mosaic.

But if you decide to go with ceramic tiles, remember that using smaller ones will involve using more grout: a substance that can be harder to clean, and quite likely to stain over time. So, starting out with a darker coloured grout might ultimately prove a smart choice, and you may want to look into sealing it with epoxy resin.

    Marble / stone

Another oldie-but-goodie, stone and marble both come as tiles too. But the most elegant results often involve a single clean slab.

Once used to carve out the Statue of David, Italy’s iconic Carrara marble is not always the cheapest choice; but with its soft, grey veins and bright white speckles, it’s a material that suits just about every living space – and at the same time manages to give it a lift.

Granite stone splashbacks, meanwhile, can also look very striking – particularly if you abandon plain grey for more interesting colour (like Nordic black or blue pearl) or a chose a slab with some rich, varied veins.

But it definitely pays to do some geological research, as not every stone will be equally dense. Some splashbacks may in fact be more or less porous, which will of course make them likely to stain.

    Glass tiles and mirrored glass

Edgy, sleek and oh-so-elegant, glass- and mirror-based splashbacks can be a wonderful way to add a light to your kitchen and create a pleasant feeling of space. A plain and simple window can actually be the perfect splashback, should the layout of your kitchen allow such a thing (and presuming that you have a nice view).

But glass splashbacks can also come in all sorts of colours, and be fritted, fused, frosted and stained. LED lighting, shimmer and glitter can all form part of the package, while mirrored splashbacks need not just be, well, mirrors, but can be sold in a glossy black or smoke grey

Such glossy, black splashbacks can be a perfect companion to glossy, black modern cooktops, like the N90 from NEFF.

    Stainless steel

While marble and porcelain are the ‘classic’ splashback choices, stainless steel could be fairly be called as the modern one. Durable, cheap and extremely hygienic, it’s the shiny go-to option for most restaurants and industrial kitchens and starting to look equally good at home in most homes.

One reason for their popularity may sound counter-intuitive: while stainless steel flashbacks are easy to clean, they also need to be cleaned, so as to maintain an entirely streak-free appearance. Keeping on top of smudges, splashes and fingerprints will also mean keeping little germs at bay.

So if you’re looking for a more modern look that perfectly fits your modern kitchen, our built-in stainless steel or graphite grey ovens will blend right in and complement your kitchen.

  6. Kitchen benchtops: Things to consider and 5 of our favourite options

Comments Off on Kitchen benchtops: Things to consider and 5 of our favourite options

Your benchtop will be getting a lot of use throughout the lifespan of your kitchen, so considering whether it will stand the test of time in terms of style and durability is necessary. Some other things you’ll want to consider include:

    • Price: some materials are going to be more expensive than others, so make sure you’re aware of what your budget is and what you can afford. Cheap doesn’t always mean it’s the right choice!

    • Quality: will this material chip and crack, or will it stand the test of time? Durability is a key consideration, particularly with growing families that may be a little bit rough with the kitchen over the years.
    • Maintenance: does it require regular maintenance, or does it just need a wipe every now and then? Marble benchtops are quite easy to clean and maintain, while timber is more likely to get weathered if not properly maintained. You may also need specialist products to maintain the look of stainless steel – so ongoing care should be a part of your consideration.

    • Versatility: can the material also be used for things like flooring, backsplashes and walls if required to complete the look of your kitchen? This will often come down to whether you want your kitchen benchtop to be the standout piece or to be one look – think of how the colours, textures or finish will play off other elements in your room to create interesting juxtapositions or a really cohesive look.

Now that you know what areas to look for in a kitchen benchtop material, here are some of our favourites of the moment, and a few suggestions on appliances you can incorporate into your benchtop design to tie it all together.

    Quartz benchtops

Your kitchen benchtop should be easy to clean, and quartz benchtops can be easily wiped down with a soapy cloth or sponge. They’re durable and low maintenance, so you can spend more time doing the things that matter most to you. To make your benchtop stand out, you can incorporate an induction cooktop with TwistPadFire control into the quartz benchtop to take your cooking to the next level! A darker quartz will help hide any stains or scratches that may appear over the years, so keep this in mind when selecting a colour.

    Porcelain benchtops

If you’re looking for a strong benchtop that won’t stain, then porcelain benchtops are worth considering. They are unlikely to be affected by liquid spills, and they’re tough to scratch or scuff. Porcelain won’t fade in direct sunlight (useful if you have a skylight above your benchtop), and they can be recycled down the track. You can get a range of prints on porcelain, too, if you’re looking to make it look like another material to suit your kitchen design.

Our vented cooktop combines the convenience of the NEFF Induction cooktop with a built-in ventilation system, meaning you save on vertical space and remove the need for a separate rangehood. We love this style of cooktop with porcelain benchtops because it maintains sleek lines, while modernizing the materials.

    Marble benchtops

Marble benchtops are known for their ability to stay cool, which makes it an ideal material for those long summer cook-ups. No two marble benchtops are the same, either, thanks to the imperfections that may be present in individual marble slabs. Choosing the slab that’s perfect for your kitchen is half the fun, and with a good sealer, marble benchtops can be cleaned without any fuss. If you’re looking for a way to elevate the design of your kitchen, why not incorporate a gas cooktop into your marble benchtop?

Click here to see how a real NEFF customer has used a marble counter in their kitchen to bring to life their monochrom aesthetic.

    Timber benchtops

If you’re looking for a feature piece in your kitchen, then a timber benchtop can help add to the rustic look of your home. To keep it in good shape, apply a coat of natural oil when you have the time. Timber benchtops are affordable and can be crafted as once-off pieces, and can even be more environmentally friendly. They store carbon forever, and if you ever go to renovate your kitchen again, the timber benchtop can be re-purposed to give it a new lease on life.

Elevated ovens can make potentially rustic kitchen designs feel more modern, particularly when they include the Slide&Hide© door or steam functionality. The NEFFLight can also add some brightness to your room, allowing you to see your baking as it happens.

    Stainless steel benchtops

Chefs love stainless steel benchtops, and it’s easy to see why. Stainless steel benchtops are a favourite in commercial kitchens, and they’re becoming more popular when health-minded people go to renovate their kitchen at home. Stainless steel benchtops are easy to clean and heat-resistant, meaning they’re perfect for a kitchen that’s going to be used regularly. They’re also hygienic and simple to keep clean, so you’ll be exposed to fewer germs floating whenever you’re in the kitchen.

An electric cooktop can help complete the minimalist design of a stainless steel benchtop if that’s what you’re looking for from your kitchen renovation!

  7. 6 unique kitchen elements to add personality to your kitchen renovation

Comments Off on 6 unique kitchen elements to add personality to your kitchen renovation

But here’s the good news, folks. A stylish kitchen doesn’t have to be a brand-spankin’ new one. Many designers these days are instead reaching for the sorts of fixtures, finishes and stylistic flourishes that bring with them a well-worn and lived-in appeal. Call it rustic charm, boho chic, modern farmhouse or just call it stylish.

In this article we share five ways to cook up a new kitchen look – without throwing the old one out.

Update your splashback with decorative tiles

There’s a reason why colourful or patterned tiles have been decorating kitchens since 4000 BC. That reason is instant personality. When chosen carefully (and used sparingly), a tiled splashback, floor or small slice of wall can enliven the most anonymous ‘cooking space’ to create a kitchen that is truly your own. And, for the most part, it can be pretty cheap too.

Brighten the walls with a lick of paint

While neutral or monochrome schemes are likely to have a more timeless appeal, a few well-thought-out splashes of colour can have huge ripple effect on the feeling of your entire home. Plus, it’s quick and economical.

Which colour should you choose? Well, it all comes down to taste, of course -not to mention your kitchen’s unique size, shape, contents and lighting. But it might be worth considering earthy tones, such as rich and warming clay, dark colours like inky blues and blacks to add drama or pale, cool shades of green for a calming effect.

Give life back to second-hand items

Op shops, antique stores or even your own garage can unearth wonders – from legitimate antiques to sturdy basics that can be transformed with a bit of varnish or paint. The key is to shop with imagination – you really can create some truly unique statement pieces if you have the vision to see what’s possible.

    Have a light-bulb moment

That’s right – changing your lighting can do wonders in shifting the mood and aesthetic of the room. Why not trade in overhead fluorescents for a warmer orange bulb, or add to the ambience with a selection of lamps? Even fairy lights in jars or wound across door frames can add a bit of mystique to your cooking space and highlight the colours of your appliances in a new way.

    Change the kitchen handles

Don’t think your kitchen can handle a total makeover? Well, why not stick to just the handles – a simple and understated way to spotlight new colours and textures around the room. From doors to cupboards, and even the surrounding furniture, a few new handles can bring a whole new feeling to the room. Why not experiment with a statement colour like a pastel green or yellow, or a new bold texture like cast iron or wood? Speaking of colour lifts…

Give grey a go for something different

While stainless steel has been a popular choice with NEFF appliances for years, recent customers have been loving the option to have graphite grey strips and handles. This darker shade adds a touch of modernity and style to kitchens of any colour.

A dark, sleek, neutral colour that goes with pretty much anything, NEFF’s Graphite Grey range sports a darker shade of strips and handles, which are as delightful to look at as they are to touch. While it’s a colour that doesn’t scream out for praise and attention, we promise that’s just what it will get.

  8. Kitchen design ideas for a small kitchen

Comments Off on Kitchen design ideas for a small kitchen

    Remove upper cabinets

The idea of removing the upper cabinets in your kitchen might give you a feeling of dread, but open storage such as shelves gives an airier and more spacious feel in your kitchen. Wire panel shelving is a great option as it maximises storage by adapting to your kitchen’s needs. You can add in or take away shelves, hang glasses upside down and even introduce a wine rack. When space is at a premium you need to make sure every inch counts.

If you’re not quite ready to relinquish your upper cabinets, you could replace the solid fronts with glass. This pulls the eye past the cabinet frames and into depths of the cabinets, so the walls feel farther away.

Extend tiles from countertop to ceiling

Add height and interest by covering the entire wall from counter to ceiling with tiles. A tall backsplash can draw eyes up the wall and make the entire room seem taller. It’s a great way to either maximise the effect of a high ceiling or create the illusion of one to make the space look lighter. Make sure to choose plain tiles if you decide to go down this route and in a neutral colour or this design idea can have the opposite effect.

Invest in a Rolling Kitchen Cart

You may not have the space to expand your countertops or add a full island, so think about bringing in a slim rolling kitchen cart or bar cart to hold regularly used items or serve as extra counter space. Even a narrow one can work as a spot to set tools and ingredients on while you cook. You can then easily move it out of the way when you aren’t using it.

    Use cabinet lighting

Lighting is vital for creating the illusion of a larger kitchen. The more light available, the bigger the space will feel. Natural light is preferable, so if you have the opportunity to put in skylights or glass doors this will make your kitchen instantly feel larger.

Alternatively, add lights underneath wall cupboards or at the base of floor units. Make sure that you don’t use a lampshade that decreases the amount of light. Spotlights are ideal for maximum light.

Buy an oven with steam or microwave functionality

A great way to cut down on the number of appliances in your kitchen is to purchase one that can do multiple jobs at once. Our NEFF Built-in oven with steam function is great example as it allows you to bake, roast or steam, meaning there’s no need to fill your kitchen with bulky rice cookers or vegetable steamers. Or if you are a regular microwave user, you could opt for our NEFF oven with integrated microwave functionality.

    Zone with flooring

Contrary to popular belief, small kitchens can still be used as kitchen/dining spaces. And through clever zoning you can make the room feel like two separate rooms without compromising on space.

Choose two distinct flooring styles and use them to trick the eye into thinking that there are two spaces. A patterned option is best for the kitchen as it’s more energising and helps disguise spillages. Meanwhile, calming neutral styles work well for a relaxed dining zone.

    Get creative with corners

A tiny kitchen still has to cater for even the most basic of food prep and serving, meaning it’s key to use every last bit of available space by being savvy with the design solutions.

Ensure the units are as tall as physically possible to elongate the space. Making the most of magic corners and other clever mechanisms will also help use every millimetre of space.

    Keep the personal touches small

While personal touches such as trinkets and windowsill pots in your kitchen reflect your personality and make the space feel like home, having too many of them scattered throughout the room will make a small kitchen feel too busy and more claustrophobic.

Select your favourite ornaments and arrange them on a shelf and frame any special artwork. A pinboard, chalkboard or mesh noticeboard can also create a single space for notes rather than a messy fridge surface, giving a feeling of order.

  9. 7 of the Best Kitchen Open Shelving Ideas

Comments Off on 7 of the Best Kitchen Open Shelving Ideas

There’s no such thing as too much storage in the kitchen. The never-ending accessories, pots, pans and recipe books easily fill up every nook and cranny. So, it’s good to have a mixture of options that make the space functional to use; eye-level cupboards are ideal for dinnerware and glassware, smaller drawers for cutlery and deep drawers for large pots, pans and woks. But have you considered open shelving in your kitchen?

It’s a new storage trend we’re seeing (or rather, a resurgence of a traditional one) in many modern kitchens. Whether it’s a wall of shelving, a corner nook or floating shelves, people are choosing to incorporate open shelving into their kitchen design for both functional and aesthetic reasons. We’ve put together 7 of the best open shelving ideas to inspire you.

    1. Repurpose your existing cabinets

A good way to sustainably integrate open shelving in the kitchen is to utilise some of the cabinets you already have. Simply remove the doors and hardware, and then give the interior a fresh coat of paint. You could choose a contrasting colour to your walls to add depth and interest. Dark colours will make the crockery inside pop.

     2. Make a statement with hanging shelves

Open shelving needs to always be hung against the wall. Hanging shelves can create a focal point in the room and are a good solution in a kitchen that has limited wall space – they allow you to add storage in area that normally wouldn’t allow for it, without obstructing the view. If you’re the type of person that wants to feature your culinary heroes front and centre, then consider building a book nook!

    3. Go retro with plate racks

A popular choice in kitchens across the globe in the 80’s, plate racks are having something of a moment. Not only do they improve the overall functionality and work-flow of your kitchen, they’re a great way to display your favourite plates and make serving food for large gatherings a breeze.

    4. Use kitchen shelving to zone a space

If you have an open plan kitchen but are struggling to define the layout, then shelves could be the perfect solution. To divide up a cooking/living space you could opt for tall, freestanding shelves. They are easy to install and add storage that can easily be accessed from both sides. Shelving could also be built into the side of a kitchen island to maximise space. This works well with an open plan kitchen where you want to create a neat line of sight and can be strengthened with the NEFF vented cooktop in the centre of your island, removing the need for an overhead cooktop.

    5. Create a shelving feature wall

Feeling bold? Take the plunge and go for floor to ceiling shelving that puts all your wares on display. You could fill them with a mix of items for an uncurated look that adds to the colour and texture of the room – think candles, accessories, plants and even mugs. Or, for a minimalist approach, select one or two colours that complement your overall colour school and display select items. If your collection is more sizeable, allocate a corner and opt for built in book nook to store your books.

    6. Add shelves to the bottom of your cabinets

It may sound a little strange but attaching open shelving to the bottom of your upper cabinets is an interesting way to use space that’s often ignored. While this idea is dependent on how much room you have, it’s a great way to draw the eye to an unexpected focal point. Place them near (but not too close) to the cooktop and use them to store items that you usually find yourself reaching for when cooking up a storm. And if you’re look to upgrade your cooktop, NEFF induction cooktops are also well-equipped with child safety locks for extra comfort. Plus, they’re easy to clean and heats the contents of your pan almost instantly, saving you time!

    7. Blend shelving into the walls

If you’d rather not draw the eye to shelving but want some extra storage space, you could paint your shelves in the same shade as your walls. That way, the shelves and their contents will be less noticeable while still providing a useful way to store items. If your cookbook collection is on the smaller side, you could consider adding a floating shelf somewhere around your cupboards.
